European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
