The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
As any prominent honors show nears, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
